Every year, The GreenHouse offers mentoring, tutoring and leadership development for over 300 children in the Gardenland Northgate neighborhood (which claims one the highest poverty rates in Sacramento). To help fund such an endeavor is the annual Kids at Heart dinner and auction fundraiser, to be held this Saturday, May 30, at 6pm in the Clunie Community Center Grand Hall. The Kids at Heart dinner provides an enormous chunk of The GreenHouse’s annual budget. Tickets are $60 per person. This coming Saturday, May 16, Clunie Community Center will host the performance of Native American artist and motivational speaker, Tony Redhouse.  A mixer will begin at 5:30pm, with the performance starting at 6pm. Come on by Clunie Community Center this coming Easter Sunday, April 4, for the 28th Annual East Sacramento Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast and Easter Egg Hunt. Breakfast starts at 7:30am, and includes all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage, fruit and drinks. After that, children aged 0-10 will participate in age group separated egg hunts. This coming Friday, March 27, the Sacramento Food Film Festival comes to East Sac. And this evening’s event promises food and fun for the entire family. From 6-9pm, the Clunie Community Center will host Family Movie Night and Dinner, including a screening of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory and a spaghetti dinner made by Selland’s Market Café chefs Randall Selland and Ravin Patel. Dinner will include pasta, salad and French bread with a slice of blueberry pie for dessert (inspired by the unfortunate Violet Beauregarde in the film). The East Sac area has a fascinating history, both ecologically and socially. To find out more about how East Sac has developed over the centuries into what it is today, stop by Clunie Community Center this Wednesday, January 14, for a presentation by historian, author and former U.S. Forest Service ecologist Paula Peper.
