East Sac 4th of July Parade of 2020 Cancelled

East Sac 4th of July Parade of 2020 Cancelled

Posted by on Jul 4, 2020 in 4th of July, East Sac, Events, Fab 40's | 0 comments

As you can probably already guess, the famous East Sac 4th of July parade is officially not happening this year. The need for social distancing and limiting the spread of the Coronavirus is greater than the need to have our traditional parade. As the story goes, this amazing tradition starting about 90 years ago when a handful of kids with a wagon and a dog circled the blocks up 41st Street, across J Street, down 42nd Street, along Folsom Blvd and back up 41st Street creating what has been the parade route that so many of us have loved ever since. My wife and I have often ridden our tandem, recumbent, five wheeled bike along the parade route over the past 12 years. This will be the first year that there will be no fire engines or any other official parade. The City of Sacramento isn’t issuing any street closure permits this year in an effort to encourage social distancing. It’s affecting the big parade and the smaller block parties around the city. For the first time in over twenty years, the block that I live on near McKinley park won’t be blocking off our street for our annual block party and instead we will each be celebrating in our front yards instead of gathered together as a cluster in the center of the block. I hope everyone has a safe and physically distanced 4th of July this year and that we get to see you all at the Fab 40’s parade next year!  ...

38th Street 11th Annual Blood Drive!

38th Street 11th Annual Blood Drive!

Posted by on Sep 23, 2019 in East Sac, Events, Fab 40's | 1 comment

I love what our neighbors do for the community and the annual blood drive on 38th Street is a perfect example. I don’t know how many years I’ve participated but I look forward to giving a pint every year for such a good cause. I hope to see many of my neighbors there this year. Here is the email I received from the organizers.   Dear Friends and Neighbors, We like to think the 38th Street Blood Drive is a party, and we hope you’ll consider joining us.  We’ll have tents and tables on the front lawn, and two bloodmobiles parked on the street.  As usual, we’ll be grilling sausages and pouring our favorite beverages.  This is our eleventh annual drive.  It is the longest running neighborhood blood drive in Sacramento.   It occurs Thursday, October 3rd,  from 3:00-7:00.  To schedule an appointment, please go to bloodsource.org/drives and enter location code M597.  If you prefer, please call us at 916-451-5507 or email alicemcauliffe12@gmail.com with your preferred time and I’ll schedule an appointment for you.  If you have any friends who would like to donate, we’d be happy to schedule them as well.  Anyone 17 or older can donate.  Those who are 16 can donate with parental permission, using a form available on the bloodsource.org website.  Please remember to bring a photo id and drink plenty of fluids beforehand.  If you have any questions about eligibility, please call 800-995-4420 and ask for the “Nurse of the Day”.  If possible, please make an appointment so we have no gridlock and we know how many folks to expect.  We look forward to seeing you and having a good time.  We are honored and touched that  you continue to support this very worthwhile cause.  We do this in memory of my wonderful mom, Rosemary Lonczak, who lived years longer as a result of numerous blood transfusions.  Sincerely, Alice and Pat McAuliffe...

East Sac Fab 40’s 4th Of July Parade 2019

East Sac Fab 40’s 4th Of July Parade 2019

Posted by on Jul 2, 2019 in 4th of July, East Sac, Events, Fab 40's | 0 comments

Get ready to kick off the summer with hundreds of your favorite neighbors at the East Sac Fab 40’s 4th Of July Parade! Once again, the parade will start at 11:00 on 41st Street between J and M Street. The parade will do a big loop onto J Street, down 42nd Street, around Folsom Boulevard and then finish where it started on 41st Street. Then it will breakout into a large block party with live bands and people milling in the streets and visiting with their neighbors. When we call it a parade what we really mean is a bunch of festive neighbors ambling along together and a few people sitting on the sidewalks or front lawns watching the masses of revealers doing the slowest walk around the block as possible. There are usually more people in the parade than watching it so come out and join us. The weather this year is going to be perfect for being outdoors so I expect record levels of turnout this year. This will also be a great opportunity to have a block party and hang out with your neighbors so take advantage of a 4th of July that’s not over 100 degrees and get outside early and often on this amazing day! 10th Annual 38th Street Blood Drive

The amazing McAuliffe family is holding their 10th Annual Blood Drive on Monday September 17th. I’ve already booked my time for giving blood and I look forward to seeing many of my neighbors there. Below is the email they sent me because hearing about the event in their words is better than me trying to paraphrase it. Our tenth annual Blood Drive occurs Monday, September 17  from 3:00-7:00.  To schedule an appointment, please go to bloodsource.org/drives and enter location code M597.  If you prefer, please call us at 451-5507 or email alicemcauliffe12@gmail.com with your preferred time and I’ll schedule an appointment for you. Year after year, you keep coming back, even on 100 degree days.  We are honored and touched that  you continue to support this very worthwhile cause.  We do this in memory of my wonderful mom, Rosemary Lonczak, who lived years longer as a result of numerous blood transfusions. East Sac 4th of July Parade 2018

East Sac 4th of July Parade 2018

Posted by on Jun 28, 2018 in 4th of July, East Sac, Events, Fab 40's | 0 comments

The weather has heated up and summer is almost here! We’re just a week away from the biggest neighborhood block party of the year.  The East Sac 4th of July parade is a great way to start off your summer celebrations. Come and hang out with hundreds of neighbors and see all the amazing ways that people show their festive red, white and blue spirits.  Unless things have changed from all of the past years, the parade will start at 11:00 on 41st Street just south of J Street. The block will be packed all the way down to M Street and probably even half way down the next block.  Once the parade starts it will do a big loop onto J Street, down 42nd Street, around Folsom Boulevard and then finish where it started on 41st Street. Do as we do after the morning parade and go have a great block party and get to know your neighbors better or make your way to Cal Expo in the evening (or somewhere with a good view of the sky above Cal Expo) and enjoy the fireworks show.  I love the community that we have here in East Sac and knowing more of my neighbors here than I have in all of my pervious homes combined. Given that I’m never leaving East Sac or my home now that I’ve discovered them, the number of neighbors I know will continue to grow over the years due to great events like this.  Here are some pictures from last year taking by the incredibly talented Carlos Castille of http://www.castillephotography.com! ...

East Sacramento Lady Bird Pride

East Sacramento Lady Bird Pride

Posted by on Jan 25, 2018 in East Sac, Fab 40's, McKinley Park, Sacramento | 0 comments

Exploring Sacramento through Lady Bird written by our very own Greta Gerwig, was like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket of Sacramento familiarities and love. It’s an absolute pleasure living and working in California’s capital city but getting to see this love letter to Sacramento gives me such pride. This now iconic coming-of-age story is not only getting Sacramento recognized but Lady Bird has achieved great success even winning Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes. Now with 5 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director (the first female director nominated for an Academy Award since The Hurt Locker eight years ago) the movie has really taken flight and gone from a small Indie film to a one of the most notable films of the year. Sacramento is like living in a big city with a small-town feel. Let me share with you some of my very own favorite East Sac spots featured in the film. Rose Garden at McKinley Park – 3255 H St, Sacramento, CA 95816 Located in Historic McKinley Park, the McKinley Rose Garden sprawls over 1.5 acres and is the largest of Sacramento’s rose gardens. Rent the garden for your wedding, memorial or special event, or come enjoy its colorful and peaceful beauty. Living just two blocks away from McKinley Park, my wife and I often start our day with a walk around the park before starting work. St. Francis High School – 5900 Elvas Ave, Sacramento, CA 95819 The highly sought after St. Francis school serving students from more than 120 different schools and 90 zip codes. Offering 28 Honors and AP classes and most years seeing 100% of our graduates go on to college or study abroad after graduation. Fabulous 40s neighborhood – 38th-47th, between J Street and Folsom Blvd. This is a spectacular section of large immaculate homes in a tree-lined neighborhood of East Sacramento and home of the big blue house in the film. Club Raven – 3246 J St, Sacramento, CA 95816 Club Raven has been a neighborhood destination for 70 years. Stop by this friendly bar and grab a drink with your new friends. Pasty Shack – 4746 J St, Sacramento, CA 95819 In business since 1952, the Pasty Shack serves variations of the Cornish pasty. El Dorado Savings – 4768 J St, Sacramento, CA 95819 Another small cameo in the film right next door to the Pasty Shack Cookie’s Drive In – 5640 H St Sacramento, CA 95819 For some of the best burgers in town, the choice is easy but which burger to have there is a tough choice. They have all of the regular burger choices plus buffalo, ostrich and more. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Cookie’s Drive In is a great dining option for any time of day. Other great locations...
