East Sacramento Lady Bird Pride

East Sacramento Lady Bird Pride

Posted by on Jan 25, 2018 in East Sac, Fab 40's, McKinley Park, Sacramento | 0 comments

Exploring Sacramento through Lady Bird written by our very own Greta Gerwig, was like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket of Sacramento familiarities and love. It’s an absolute pleasure living and working in California’s capital city but getting to see this love letter to Sacramento gives me such pride. This now iconic coming-of-age story is not only getting Sacramento recognized but Lady Bird has achieved great success even winning Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes. Now with 5 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director (the first female director nominated for an Academy Award since The Hurt Locker eight years ago) the movie has really taken flight and gone from a small Indie film to a one of the most notable films of the year. Sacramento is like living in a big city with a small-town feel. Let me share with you some of my very own favorite East Sac spots featured in the film. Rose Garden at McKinley Park – 3255 H St, Sacramento, CA 95816 Located in Historic McKinley Park, the McKinley Rose Garden sprawls over 1.5 acres and is the largest of Sacramento’s rose gardens. Rent the garden for your wedding, memorial or special event, or come enjoy its colorful and peaceful beauty. Living just two blocks away from McKinley Park, my wife and I often start our day with a walk around the park before starting work. St. Francis High School – 5900 Elvas Ave, Sacramento, CA 95819 The highly sought after St. Francis school serving students from more than 120 different schools and 90 zip codes. Offering 28 Honors and AP classes and most years seeing 100% of our graduates go on to college or study abroad after graduation. Fabulous 40s neighborhood – 38th-47th, between J Street and Folsom Blvd. This is a spectacular section of large immaculate homes in a tree-lined neighborhood of East Sacramento and home of the big blue house in the film. Club Raven – 3246 J St, Sacramento, CA 95816 Club Raven has been a neighborhood destination for 70 years. Stop by this friendly bar and grab a drink with your new friends. Pasty Shack – 4746 J St, Sacramento, CA 95819 In business since 1952, the Pasty Shack serves variations of the Cornish pasty. El Dorado Savings – 4768 J St, Sacramento, CA 95819 Another small cameo in the film right next door to the Pasty Shack Cookie’s Drive In – 5640 H St Sacramento, CA 95819 For some of the best burgers in town, the choice is easy but which burger to have there is a tough choice. They have all of the regular burger choices plus buffalo, ostrich and more. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Cookie’s Drive In is a great dining option for any time of day. Other great locations...

Sacramento Beer Week 2015

Sacramento Beer Week 2015

Posted by on Feb 17, 2015 in East Sac, Events, Sacramento | 1 comment

Did you know that Sacramento is one of the nations leading craft beer markets? Starting on March 26th you will have the opportunity to get fully educated in local craft beers at the Sacramento Beer Week! Six years ago there were only 8 breweries in the Sacramento area but we have grown to over 40 breweries and are now celebrating the 6th annual Beer Week. The festival now attracts people from across the country. It all starts on February 26th at the Sacramento Brewer’s Showcase in the California Auto Museum where you will be able to enjoy exclusively local breweries. It finishes on March 8th with the Capitol Beer Fest event on the Capitol Mall with breweries coming from all over the country to help us celebrate our local love of beer. Last year, the Capitol Beer Fest event had about 5,000 people attend and it is expect to be more this year (and a bit better prepared too). Between the 26th and 8th there will be over 500+ official and unofficial events at local establishments such as an offering of New Belgium’s limited edition (3 keg batch) Salted Belgian Chocolate Stout at Berkley Bar or the Steal the Glass Night at Der Biergarten. With all this talk of local breweries and varied beers I’m tempted to add another unofficial event and host a Beer Week gathering in my back...

17th Annual Sacramento Museum Day

17th Annual Sacramento Museum Day

Posted by on Feb 7, 2015 in East Sac, Events, Sacramento | 0 comments

For the 17th year, the Sacramento Association of Museums is offering the public free access to more than 25 museums and historic parks in the Sacramento area. With the exception of the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town (which will charge visitors half-price to offset traffic and security costs), all participating museums are offering free admission all day Saturday, February 7. Just a few of the participants include the California Automobile Museum, California Railroad Museum, Discovery Museum Science and Space Center, and East Sac’s very own Museum of Medical History (which is right behind my listing at 5541 C Street but I didn’t know it was there till I took that listing). For more information on all the participating museums, special activities and more, visit...

Leaf Season and the Claw!

Posted by on Nov 23, 2014 in East Sac, Sacramento | 0 comments

Here is an update about when the claw will be coming to your block to pick up leaves out of the street As per the City of Sacramento Office of Media & Communication: Leaf Season Update: Since November 1, crews have completed two full leaf collection rotations throughout the entire city in two weeks, and we started our third rotation this week. Crews are reporting heavier leaf drop, and larger piles. It can take crews ten days to two weeks between leaf collections during these heavy weeks. Check the Service Day Finder often as we update our collection estimates daily and your date may change. To make our estimates we factor in how many crews we have and how many zones we are clearing in a day. The biggest variable is Mother Nature. There is no way to predict how many piles we will encounter in any one zone. Also the heavy leaf drop is starting later this year than last year. Lots of residents are using their yard waste containers which we continue to collect weekly. This is proving to be a great help in getting more material off the street. Our crews will be working on Thanksgiving. I checked the Service Day Finder and sure enough, it had the correct day that the claw would be seen on my block…...
